Not sure what’s wrong, but the first unit lost volume, and so did the second one.

i demo’ed this product next to many competing products by using the same source material for a true comparison. this product was perhaps the worst of the entire lot, faring far worse than products much cheaper. please note my primary concern is sound quality.

i consider myself an audiophile, and have no problem spending lifetimes of money on home theater systems. i am exceptionally picky about my sound systems and demand the best. in particular, there’s nothing i hate more about a speaker than for the speaker to remind me its there, as it relates to sound. for example, if a speaker does a poor job of producing low frequency noise and rattles on bass, it drives me crazy. which brings me to my now completed, long journey to find a high quality clock radio. i had been searching for a clock radio that also has some preset noises (e.g., rain, waterfalls, etc.). i bought some sharper image product that fit the bill, but produced very lackluster sound results. then i looked toward the bose products, but the best ones didn’t have a clock, or anything preprogrammed. then i realized – target sells great nature sounds cds – how about i put those on my ipod and get a system like this. shazam! so while this device does not come with pre-loaded sounds, it does accept the ipod and, most importantly, produce shockingly great sound. i never expected a device to sound as great as this. it has a 3d sound feature that probably sounds awful for regular music, but makes nature noise (thunderstorms) sound particularly real and encompassing. even better, when the thunder strikes, it sounds realistic and i don’t hear an awfully low quality driver rattle in the device. i have to admit that i’m particularly surprised with the ihome; i demo’ed other ihome products and they sounded like garbage. not so here.
i did compare it to the Sony Speaker Dock Clock Radio for iPod / iPhone (use this string of words to find it on amazon). i demoed both in the store on the same source, and this was infinitely better. the speakers in the sony simply sounded awful.
other aspects of the ihome that i really like:
- remote control – yes, kinda silly when you consider this device sits within arm reach, but its nice to have handy for varying volume, etc. even better, though, the remote fully controls the ipod
- aux in – if for some reason in the future the ipod dock breaks, i can run a line from the ipod to the ihome; nice backup
- charging – when docked, the ihome charges my ipod. nice feature.

I bought this radio for my daughter for Christmas. 90 days later it has stopped playing songs from the ipod. We have tried 3 different ipods and it will not play any of them. One of them was the newer I-touch. The am/fm radio still works but I didnt buy it to play the radio I bought it for the ipod player. Now that it has been over 90 days the store wont take it back, and I have to pay $20 to send it back to sony for a “refurbished” unit, they wont even give me a new one, what a rip off. I wouldnt buy this unit if I were you. The sound wasnt that great anyway. Buyer beware.

Purchase based on reviews and Sony’s reputation. It’s everything my wife needs for her sewing room. Sound is great, easy to operate. Easy to start up without reading any instructions. Will likely buy another for the bedroom.

I was expecting rich sound from it. But it is ok in sound, all other feature are good. I bought this one because of SONY brand but it is not good as T612 from Altec.
